The Cine-Theatre, inaugurated on
10th January 1923, is a unique aechitectural example in Portugal,
since it has a painted façade.
It has a capacity of four
hundred seats in the baignoires, the boxes and the stalls. You can also see
the orchestra pit, a large stage and a painted vaulted ceiling.
The decision to build it was
made by José Summavielle Soares, whose grandfather Brazilian
José Florêncio Soares, who had emigrated to Rio de Janeiro
In a town where there were a
Recreative Society, a Drama Group, a Music Group and a theatre with an
animation system, the Cine-Theatre was the last missing cultural necessary
piece of entertainment for the new middle class. That social class mainly
composed of emigrants from Brazil managed to create the life style they had
learnt in Brazil and during their travelling around the world.
The Cine-Theatre witnessed
significant political and social events and the performance of the most
important actors of that period. The first film projections were performed
there too.
The building was bought by
the Town Council in 2002 and they are planning its restoration.
